This is an unusual double courtyard, separated by an arcade. The arched arcade also completely surrounds the courtyard, a highly satisfactory arrangement that permits one to sit outdoors, under shelter, on rainy days. It is worth recalling that one of the arts of the Japanese garden is to "tune" it so that it makes harmonious sounds in the rain. Although rarely found in European courtyards, the Japanese garden is a worthy model for small, enclosed outdoor spaces, and one that might be much more widely applied in the West.
