Like the square before, this one also has a curbed area in the center with heavy traffic passing on all sides. However, the island is large enough to be a place in its own right, and people will doubtless use it as such.
This is one of the newer quarters in Lyon - the old Roman quarters, to the west of the rivers, is laid out with narrow, twisting streets. The 17th and 18th Century additions are laid out on a grid, such as here. Notice the extravagant fountain in the foreground.
