From other views, I believe that this square is little larger than what we see here. (I suspect that the photographer was actually standing in a window.) The church was laid out in a way that created this square and incorporated it into the church. It's a nearly perfect small church, to boot.
The fountain is an excellent addition and appears to obey Alexander's dictum that it should not be precisely in the center. Why the chain, though?
Notice the gorgeous steps! No doubt people often sit on them on sunny afternoons.
