Although the curvature of this street is very slight, consider how much less interesting it would be if it were ruler-straight.
Notice how much the poor condition of the paving and the standing puddles detract from the appearance of the street. The shuttered shops on the right distinctly reduce the comfort of the street. While eyes on the street from above make a quiet street safer, eyes on the street at street level are even more effective. When the street-level windows are blocked (or nonexistent), the street takes on a chilly feel.
