Bern, Zahringerbrunnen

Here we have another fountain, this one in slightly more favorable circumstances than the last. The ground here is nearly level, so the fountain need not be surrounded by the somewhat awkward arrangement of steps in the previous image. The steps make for a nice place for people to gather and relax. Steps can also be incorporated in fountains on level ground, and often are.

This is a good, utilitarian, heavily-used urban space. It appears to be something of a distribution center. The proportions of the space leave a little to be desired - this is almost a square (given that most of the streets surrounding it are almost certainly considerably narrower), but it is too narrow for its length. If just a little concavity had been introduced into the line of buildings on both sides, the quality of the space would have been much improved.
