A Pattern Language

Christopher Alexander et al., A Pattern Language (New York: Oxford University Press, 1977). The book is a standard reference work and should still be in print. Last I knew it was still a bargain at $60.00 (It's hardcover and about 1000 pages.)

I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in the built environment. Alexander is a highly original thinker, and this is a seminal work that has been central in my development of the reference design for carfree cities.
