This view of the Doge's palace in Venice shows an example of one of the finest arcades anywhere. Almost the entire frontage of the Piazza San Marco is arcaded, but none is better than this. The question of the form of the arch is an interesting one. We can have elliptical arches, round arches, gothic arches, and the Eastern arch, and in various proportions. The variation can be fascinating, and there is not real reason not to mix the styles, even in adjacent buildings.
