The aggressive planting of trees on the waterfront is not entirely unsuitable to very hot climates, but San Sebastian is on the cool north coast of Spain, where the shade is not so badly needed. The result is that the small buildings are monuments are lost in a sea of trees. This is a beautiful site for a city - the concave shape of the bay is ideal, as it makes the entire waterfront visible over a long distance.
